My name is Michael Owen a.k.a. Big Dog. I've been fishing the reefs in South East Asia for 15 years plus.Mainly Sumbawa (east of Bali) and East Java (G-Land).Thats walking the reefs !! Spinning... No Boats.
Its the kind of fishing that can test your skills in many ways. The walks are long and hot, the terrain dangerous and the surf relentless.Hunting for Giant Trevally in the white water surf... thats me !! After many years of trial and error finding the right equiptment with the minimun of breakdowns has been enduring. From the shoes I wear, to the rod and reel I carry, and of course the lures that are tied on to the line. Finding lures that work, store bought, was near impossible. I resorted to building my own for years. Making them was a long process, especially ones that could stand up to the conditions, and survive more than a fish or two.
Then a few years ago, along came a trial box of lures sent to me by Mark White, a friend of a friend who heard about some guy in Grajagan catching some decent G.T.s off the reef. I heard he was experimenting with CERAMIC lures and plugs. A ceramic potter myself from years past, I thought about it for a minute and the lights switched on !! This could be good. Finially I was holding something in my hand that had all the qualities of what I had been searching for in the beggining. But would they catch fish ?? Would it have the action in the water ?? Well, I havn't looked back since !! These lures have proved themselves over and over again. Finially a lure with enough weight to be casted out when using heavier line. A lure that does'nt self destruct, especially after being in the teeth of countless fish and a lure that has the action required to bring em up !!! I've caught a vast variety of species from small blue fin trevally, not all that bigger than the lure, to 100lb black and mean giant trevally. Countless in the 30-50 lb range. Not to mention the odd queen fish, yellow empress (a bottom fish) and even huge barracuda. All shore based spinning or "whipping" as my fellow Hawaiian bruddas call it !!
I know Mark has recently developed more lure and plug styles than I"m using. I've seen the photos and heard the stories that go along with them. WORLDWIDE. Everyone seems stoked !! I Am
Thanks again Mark

In my experience in using these lures, have been nothing but extreme joy from all standpoints!

I have been testing these lures for sometime now. Although I have only used them in Hawaii, in saltwater. Being a "get the job done as fast as I can" guy, I tend to mess things up once in awhile. Like dropping lure heads on the boat, Whipping into the rocks, etc... We all have done it, especially when the fish are biting! These ceramic lure heads have proved themselves time and time again. NEVER have I had one break on me yet! Yes, a few have gotten lost due to getting stuck on the bottom or the line breaks, but as far as durabilty, these will last you ten times longer than a resin head lure. Even when catching Ono's!

I have caught many fish on these heads, some including a 60lb+Mahi Mahi, 30lb+Ono's, 110lb Ahi, Many, many Shibi-Ko, 25lb+Ulua, Papio, even a barracuda.

The ceramic heads have many "fish like" swimming techniques when being trolled. They have nice bubble trails coming off of them, and side to side swimming action. The iradecent colors, I believe, do help attract more fish, as well as the great placement of the eyes. I have had most of the fish that I have caught literally swallow the whole lure! Yes, it's a pain to get out, but I rather catch the fish than have him getting off. If you plan on using these heads, better invest in a needle nose pliers so you can retrieve your lures from the throuts of your fish!
